| Katrina? Ha!!! We now have he greatest
environmental disaster in our backyard with no end in sight! Eleven
workers have been murdered. Millions of gallons of oil have gushed
from the Gulf of Mexico and will continue to for many months to
come. This oil will most likely be around for many years to come and
will leave our coastal wetlands devastated for decades. Our local
fishermen are also suffering from this event. The effects have
streamed down all the way to the people who work in restaurants.
Peoples livelihoods are at stake here.
BP claims to be employing the local fishermen, but the part they
don't tell is how they work some for a few days and then they are
off for days, even weeks. These are days that they could be fishing
if BP had not destroyed our fisheries. Yes, destroyed it.
Carelessness by BP has caused this disaster, a disaster that
could have been prevented if the correct preparations had been in
place and functioning.
Many have said that we (Louisianans') are the "looking for a hand
out people". To those, I say this:
The disaster has left people out of work. This has come at a time
when fishermen make most of their money (the beginning of shrimp
season). Take this disaster and put it in any other
community and you get the same result. People in need!!!!!
To BP, I say this:
Our coast, our wetlands, our way of life is dying. Step up and do
what needs to be done to get this stopped! You have tried the
"containment dome", "junk shot "and the "top kill" with no luck.
Quit playing with our wetlands, wildlife and our peoples lives and
step up. |
